Critical Thinking At A Critical Time

Monologue —

Because they’re neither Black nor White, Latinos were destined to have a falling out with both groups sooner or later. It turned out to be “sooner” due in part to the immigration issue.

That issue divides most Americans. But it also unifies non-Latinos. Blacks and Whites close ranks and come together to oppose a phenomenon that has increased the size of the Latino population.

In fact, it often seems as though the only thing the two groups agree on is the need to keep out anyone who is part of the third. And if you add President Donald Trump to the mix, things are sure to get even uglier.

One of the uglier things that is happening as we approach — on July 20 — the six-month mark for Trump 2.0 is that both Blacks and Whites are bashing Latinos for giving roughly half their votes to Trump.

Recently, the Pew Research Center released an extensive study of nearly 9,000 voters conducted after the election. The study found that Trump did better with Latino voters than was previously believed.

In November, exit polls by various media companies showed that Trump won about 46% of the Latino vote. The Pew study puts the figure at 48%, with Vice President Kamala Harris getting 51%. Given the margin of error, which is usually about three or four percent, that’s basically what we call a “tie.”

Now a popular narrative has taken hold on the left. It suggests that — with mass deportations now underway in Los Angeles and other immigrant-friendly U.S. cities — those Trump-supporting Latinos must currently be experiencing a severe case of voters’ remorse. One minute, Latinos are going madly for Trump. The next minute, grandma is deported.

Anyone who believes that nonsense must have flunked “Latinos 101.” It’s sad to say this, but for many in my community, things are going swimmingly and according to plan.
